Boutiques live and die by the browse-and-grab item — the cute, affordable, hard-to-resist thing a customer picks up on the way to the register. Korean gifts are made for exactly that: design-led, giftable, and priced to move.
The catch is timing. Korean gift stock crosses the Pacific on lead times measured in weeks, and a season you order into is a season you've already missed. I run a Korean gift shop in Dallas and import most of my own inventory from Korea, so what follows is the buying calendar I actually work from — each quarter's order, worked back from the US retail moment it has to land for.
Q1 (January–March): order for Mother's Day, graduation, and spring
What you order in the new year lands for the spring gifting run — Mother's Day, teacher appreciation, graduation. Bags and pouches earn their keep here: everyday-useful, giftable, easy to display, and a natural "for mom" or "for grad" purchase. Small decor pieces round out spring resets. Q1 is also your December post-mortem — reorder the keyring and sticker designs that emptied over the holidays while you still remember which ones did.
Q2 (April–June): back-to-school, and the start of holiday planning
Back-to-school is a stationery moment, and Korean stationery owns it: journals, notebooks, pens, and stickers (see the stationery guide). Order in Q2 so it's on the shelf by late July. The less obvious Q2 job: start your Q4 holiday plan now. The biggest order of your year should be scoped — brands, budget, freight — before summer ends, not improvised in September.
Q3 (July–September): the holiday order — the biggest of the year
Q4 does an outsized share of a gift shop's revenue, and Korean gifts are stocking-stuffer shaped almost by design. Keyrings and small character accessories are the perfect impulse buy at the counter; stickers and small stationery fill the impulse-price tier; candles and home fragrance carry the cozy end of the display (candle guide). Place this order early enough in Q3 that ocean freight plus customs clearance puts stock on your floor in October — not the week of Thanksgiving.

Q4 (October–December): reorders now, next year on the water
Q4 buying is two different jobs. The first is fast reorders on whatever is emptying — this is the one time of year air freight can be worth it, because a sold-out counter display in December is pure lost margin. The second is next year: Korean brands release dated diaries and planners in the fall, and they're a January staple, so they belong in your last order of the year. Valentine's stock — dolls and character items with genuine gift-and-collector appeal — should be on the water before the new year.
How to start
The hard part of this calendar isn't demand — it's supply. The Korean brands making these gifts are often small and domestically focused, with no English wholesale channel, slow communication, and single-brand minimums sized for Korean retailers. That hits boutiques hardest, because a gift display wants variety — a handful of doll designs, a few bag styles, an assortment of keyrings — not volume on one SKU.
Two landed-cost facts to build into the math. There is no small-order duty-free workaround: the $800 de minimis exemption is suspended indefinitely for commercial shipments, so every wholesale order clears customs as a dutiable entry. And while KORUS still eliminates the base duty on qualifying Korean-origin goods, a temporary 10% import surcharge has applied since February 2026 and is scheduled to expire July 24, 2026 unless extended — check the current rate before committing a large order. The full mechanics — customs, freight, payment — are in the import guide.
From there, the choice is chasing brands one at a time or ordering through a curated source that spreads one achievable minimum across many brands and designs (Faire vs. direct Korean wholesale covers the marketplace trade-offs).
